Many of our guests have spent most of there vacation without leaving the property. This is a great place to watch the Rio and relax. We have twenty acres along the Animas River, also Elco Creek that feeds it's own private nature preserve and abundant bird and wildlife area. This is what we offer at the Animas River Retreat, along with a nicely appointed 2 bedroom, two bath home with an acre of yard to play on. The deck commands a view of the river and property. To the North you can see the San Juan Mountains. There are miles of places to walk, along the River or Creek or adjoining fields, the residents are beaver and muskrats, deer and elk, the coyote singing circle usually seranade the night, we have seen bobcat and fox too. If you have a bird list, you likely will be able to add some names to it. In the winter view bald eagles, it is also a major Fly-Way for many migrating water fowl.

We are conveniently located between Durango, CO, and Farmington, NM, with lots of attractions in all directions. Durango boasts the Silverton Narrow Gauge Train, the Animas River with excellent rafting and kayaking trips in the summer season, and lots of hiking trails in the mountains and hills. We are also in easy driving range of both the La-Plata and Farmington airports.

For the proficient kayaker or body-surfer, when the Animas is at it's peak, several play-waves will give you an endless surf ride!! With the proper licenses and fishing gear, the Animas is rated a Gold Medal Stream, rumor is, that two State Record Trout were weighed during a Game and Fish census recently!!!
